Re:Nylon
Nylon has been a key material for Prada. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone in its bag-and-accessory line won it worldwide acclaim. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label and Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy, buzzbeast-ready diffusion range that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in for the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has changed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable ReNylon fabrics. The new collection includes six classic designs that include a belt bag, shoulder bag, tote bag duffle bag, and two backpacks made of repurposed ECONYL fabric made from recycled plastics, fishing nets and textile fiber waste that is sourced worldwide.
The material that is repurposed is a result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer which produces Econyl fabric from regenerated nylon waste, which can be reused repeatedly without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger initiative to shift Prada's entire collection from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the line also includes a pair of shoes and boots made of repurposed ECONYL, as well as various apparel items made of the same fabrication.
To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to create a series of videos titled "What We Carry" that showcases the cutting-edge process which is used to make its Re:Nylon bags. The first video features Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's decision to re-Nylon is the biggest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save the company 70,000 barrels of crude oil every year. Furthermore, the move will cut down on the company's carbon emissions by 57,000 tonnes. It's the latest sustainability initiative from the label which recently made it fur-free on its clothing and accessories, which was which was lauded by environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.
Recycled nylon
Recycled nylon does not come without its disadvantages. It's not biodegradable and can remain for a long time in landfills or in the oceans until it is broken down into smaller particles that can endanger wildlife. The fabric is also non-breathable and can shed microplastics when washed. It consumes 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon, and is more durable.
The fabric is constructed from an amalgamation of petroleum and waste plastic, which is produced from fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require more natural resources as well as the carbon emissions resulting from the production of nylon that is virgin. It is also much easier than other bag materials to handle since it doesn't need to be dyed or woven. This makes it an excellent option for bags that are frequently used, like yoga or gym equipment.
Recycled nylon is more durable and flexible than polyester or cotton which are both traditional fabrics. It is also able to take the most severe wear and tear, making it ideal for backpacks and outdoor gear. The material is also incredibly lightweight and is easily formed and stitched into the ideal shape for a bag. Nylon is a great option for outdoor gear since it is waterproof and doesn't absorb mildew or odors as easily as other fabrics.
When choosing a sustainable bag, make sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification test chemical residues as well as social and environmental responsibility. Look for brands with this certification, as they are likely to be more transparent and responsible with their products.
Patagonia for instance, offers a range of yoga equipment and backpacks that are made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. This nylon is produced using a closed loop system that consumes 50 less energy than virgin nylon. Moreover, the brand supports organizations working to save our planet.
